Afternoon Dreaming

This is the story of a Jewish Grandmother named Surrah, as told to her granddaughter: At the age of 14, life was unbearable for me. I became separated from my family. It all happened in Germany during World War II, when the nation was in great turmoil. I was taken from my home and placed in a German concentration camp. I cried every night at the thought of being away from the ones I loved. My heart ached with loneliness.

My dwelling was a dark crowded cell. There were times when I barely had enough to eat. One day I overheard the guard say, "that one is going to be mine, just wait and see". As I looked at him I could see evil, for his eyes mirrored the malignancy of his very soul. All my days were filled with fear.

Day after day I prayed fervently for protection and dreamed of being able to escape. My recurring nightmare was the evil guard running after me. I could see myself collapse from exhaustion, helplessly trapped in a dark alley. Just at the time he was about to grab me, I would wake up trembling and in a cold sweat.

The months dragged on. Then one day at the first of dawn, still in a morning daze, I heard the rattle of the keys against the iron bars. "Come with me to my office, you're going to be released" he said harshly. I followed him to his office, happy because I was being released, yet in fear that he would still try to have his way with me on that day.

As fate would have it, his intent was foiled by his superior who oversaw the transaction. With the papers in hand, I dashed out of confinement into fresh air of freedom.

I was uncertain as to how I was going to be able to find my way to America. Just about the time I was ready to give up all hope, I met John. It was like a door had been opened. I told him about my fears and also my dreams of sailing to America. Assuring me things would be alright john took a beautiful gold ring from his finger and gave it to me saying "This ring is the ring of hope, wear it and it will protect you" The moment I put the ring on my finger I felt a serene inner peace. John promised that he would guide me to the ship that would take me to America. The incident that will be vividly etched in my mind forever occurred on the second day of our journey. The german soldiers were coming towards us and I thought of the possibility of being stopped and perhaps even returned to the camp. Silently I prayed. Then I experienced an overwhelming phenomenon of being shielded by this man, as he stood in front of me obscuring me from view. The soldiers never interrogated us, they never even looked our way. It was as thought we were invisible, hidden in a spiritual light.

After many days of travel, weary, we arrived at our destinaton. The ship was docked and ready for departure. John helped me aboard ship. "You won't need the ring anymore," he spoke softly. Lamenting the time to say goodbye. I returned the ring and thanked him for his kindness. As I stood there presenting my papers to the ship Steward, my eyes scanned the area for a last glance of John, but he was no where to be seen. The Steward asked who I was looking for. When I told him I was looking for the fellow that was with me, he said "What fellow?, there was no one with you. You boarded the ship alone".

While all along I had wondered who the kind stranger was, now there was no doubt. I fell on my knees and thanked our heavenly merciful father for sending me his very special Angel to protect me.
