An if I

The scenes of war have never been a pretty sight, and this one was no exception.

The Rookie crew on the B-24 Bomer, during WWII was flying its first mission. There was no doubt that they were eager to serve their country. The courageous look in their eyes hid the fear of the unknown that was deep within their hearts.

They were flying in formation with the enemy on their tail. The flak was thunderously pounding on the plane. Bob will tell you the story that lives so vividly in his mind.

It was time to defend ourselves and return enemy fire. The roar of "bombs away" came loud and clear from the bombardier. What happened next was the real surprise. When the bombs were released the plane lifted upwards, quite unexpectedly. We found ourselves floating near the ceiling of the plane. Everything was flying about in chaos inside the plane. Completely out of control, the plane veered upward towards another plane that was in formation. In a matter of seconds we would surely collide.

The fear that lingered in the crew's heart now came to life in everyone's faces. There was no time for a lengthy prayer.

Bob remembers that everything happened so fast. All he had time to say was "Oh God". As soon as the words left his lips; he felt a holy presence, followed by a feeling of assurance and serenity. The Words came from within himself... everything is going to be alright.

The Pilot and the Co-pilot both pressed the control columns down, quickly changing the direction of the plane and stabilizing the flight.

The crew came so close to a mid air collision that day, but they were no longer in fear, because they knew that God's messengers were with them. They completed the assigned missions in safety. They felt assured they were flying on the wings of an Angel.
